Location
The Franklin-Southampton Community is situated in the Mid-Coastal Plain in Southeast Virginia, just east of the Hampton Roads area. Richmond is 75 miles northwest while Norfolk is 45 miles to the east. The terrain is relatively flat with elevations from 18 – 100 feet above sea level.
Highways
I-95, a major north-south East Coast route, is located just west of the Southampton County line. US Route 460 & US Route 58, two major east-west routes, connect the area with the greater Hampton Roads region to the east and I-95 and I-85 to the west. Route 258 connects the area with US 17 to the norgh and the North Carolina state line to the south.
Rail
CSX and Norfolk Southern provide commercial rail service in the region connecting our area to all major national markets.
Ports
The largest natural deepwater harbor in the world, the international Port of Hampton Roads, is only minutes away in Norfolk, Portsmouth and Newport News. The Virginia Port Authority is the states’ leading agency for international transportation and maritime commerce.
Air
Franklin’s Municipal Airport is a favorite stop on the north-south corridor for corporate and passenger planes. Norfolk International Airport is served by 7 major airlines while Newport News/Williamsburg Internal Airport has over 50 flights daily.
