Franklin’s public schools are composed of three schools serving grades PK-12. Student enrollment is approximately 1400 students. The schools are accredited by the Virginia Department of Education and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The school division employs about 240 people. There are approximately 125 Instructional personnel, I school psychologist, 1 school social worker, and I practical nursing instructor working with the students.

All Southampton County Public Schools are accredited by the Virginia Department of Education according to the State’s Standards of Learning. Southampton High School is also accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The School System is organized on a K-5 elementary; 6-8 middle and 9-12 high school plan. There are 4 elementary schools located in the county in addition to the Middle School/Technical Career Center/High School complex.

Southampton Academy , located in Courtland, is a coeducational, college-preparatory day school, Pre-kindergarten through Grade 12, accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Virginia Association of Independent Schools. Blending innovative and traditional learning, Southampton Academy helps each student develop to the fullest potential in an environment that fosters the growth of the whole student. The academic program is supplemented by a variety of educational trips and resource speakers. Current enrollment is approximately 470 and average class size is twelve.

Residents have excellent options for higher education. Camp Community College is a two-year institution and part of the Virginia Community College System. Camp partners with Norfolk’s Old Dominion University (ODU) to offer coursework for bachelor’s and master’s degree programs.  In addition, Camp Community College Regional Workforce Development Center in Franklin provides business-related services to meet the training and educational needs of employers in Western Hampton Roads. Chowan College, just 20 minutes away in Murfreesboro, North Carolina, offers a number of bachelor’s degree programs.

At the Courtland Recreation Center children participate in a tutorial program called the After School Knowledge program. With emphasis on health and learning, the center provides structured fun while students improve skill building on computers. All children must also participate in health and physical educational activities. There are educational field trips and arts and crafts.

The Franklin Boys and Girls Club aims to inspire and enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. Their professional staff incorporates the following themes into daily activities: Character & Leadership Development; Education & Career Development; The Arts; Health & Life Skills; and Sports, Fitness and Recreation.
